April 2026 Irrigation Update

With an abnormally dry April, the City of Abbotsford is working to have the irrigation systems in Matsqui and Sumas Prairies providing water ahead of our typical annual start date of May 15. The irrigation system take approximately two weeks to become fully operational with some areas getting irrigation water earlier than others. The City of Abbotsford expects to have most of the Sumas Prairie system operational by May 1, 2026.  The Matsqui Prairie system will see irrigation water levels start to rise with most of the system operational by May 8, 2026.

Creeks & Streams

Creeks and streams are formed by natural processes that are affected by human influences. Forested land has a capacity to absorb rainfall, through evaporation, evapo-transpiration, and infiltration into the ground. When the rate of rainfall exceeds the absorption capacity of the land, the excess rainfall runs off in a downhill direction. As it progresses downhill, this “surface runoff” from adjacent lands merges together to create brooks, creeks, streams and rivers.
