  • Prepare a Grab-and-Go kit
  • Gather your family and, if you have room, take a neighbour or someone needing transportation.  
  • Take critical items (medicine, purse, wallet, and keys) only if they are immediately available.
  • Take pets in pet kennels or on leash.
  • Shut off all gas and electrical appliances, other than refrigerators and freezers.
  • Close all windows and doors.
  • Close gates (latch) but do not lock.
  • Follow main roads out of the evacuation area and register at the Reception Centre at Abbotsford Recreation Centre (2499 McMillan Road).
    • We ask that all evacuated residents check in with the Reception Centre either in person or online within 24 hours.

• Curbside Collection -Orange Zone (Updated December 16)

  Garbage collection will resume Wednesday Dec 17th for properties in the Orange collection zone east of Highway 11 not currently under Evacuation Order or road closure, that were previously missed due to flooding.
  
  Garbage carts only will be collected at this time. Residents are asked to leave their garbage carts at the curb by 7:00 am

• Dec. 18, 2025 - 4pm - City Rescinds All Evacuation Alerts and Shifts Focus to Recovery

  The City of Abbotsford has lifted all remaining Evacuation Alerts and is moving from flood response to recovery as water levels of the Sumas and Nooksack rivers continue to decrease and the flood watch has ended.

  As residents return to their properties, they may want to have their home and other structures further assessed in consultation with their insurance providers. Additional resources and guidance for residents are available on the Return Home information page. Staff in the City’s Emergency Operations Centre have been working with non-profit organizations who are coordinating additional support for impacted properties, and this information will be updated on the Return Home page as it becomes available.

  Curbside collection of flood-damaged items and debris in the former evacuation area will be provided this weekend (Dec. 20 and 21) with the potential of additional curbside collection dates if needed. Loose materials must be bagged, and all items must be non-hazardous and placed at the curb by 7 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 20 to ensure they are picked up in this cycle. Hazardous materials will be collected at a later date. Large roll-off bins are available for impacted properties requiring the removal of large amounts of debris. Bins can be requested by impacted properties owners by emailing floodrecovery@abbotsford.ca.

  Repairs to South Parallel Road west of Whatcom Road are currently underway, and residents are reminded to follow traffic control signage. All other roads in Sumas Prairie have been reopened.

  The Emergency Operations Centre will remain operational throughout the recovery phase and updates will be available on www.abbotsford.ca if new information becomes available.  
   

• Dec. 17, 2025 - 3:30pm - City lifts all remaining Evacuation Orders and existing Evacuation Alerts

  The City of Abbotsford has downgraded the remaining 11 properties on Evacuation Order to Evacuation Alert and has rescinded the existing Evacuation Alerts for 474 properties in Sumas Prairie.

  As the floodwater has receded and the BC River Forecast Centre has downgraded the Sumas River from Flood Warning to High Stream Flow Advisory, all residents in Sumas Prairie can safely return to their properties.

  Rapid Damage Assessments were carried out on homes within the evacuation area observed to be impacted by the floodwaters prior to lifting the Orders. In total, 341 homes were assessed as green, meaning re-entry of the building is permitted, and 28 were assessed as yellow, meaning access to the structure is restricted, subject to varying conditions.

  Assessments were done on the outer structure of homes only, not the inside or other buildings on the property, such as sheds or barns. Upon returning to their property, residents may want to have their home and other structures further assessed with support of their insurer. Resources and guidance for residents are available on the Return Home information page.

  As all current Evacuation Orders have been lifted, the Reception Centre at the Abbotsford Recreation Centre is closing as of 4 p.m. today and will be operating remotely. Residents who need assistance with existing Emergency Support Services (ESS) can contact the ESS Director at 604-607-3408.

  Staff in the Emergency Operations Centre will continue to monitor river levels, dikes, roads and weather conditions over the coming days and the City will continue to provide updates to residents as new information becomes available. 

• Dec. 17, 2025 - 11:30am - City waives fees and expedites permits for flood-impacted properties

  To support property owners in Sumas Prairie impacted by the flood with the recovery and restoration process, the City of Abbotsford is waiving building permit fees and expediting permit processing.

  In total, 485 properties across Sumas Prairie were placed under Evacuation Order. As these Orders continue to be lifted and residents prepare to return home, Abbotsford City Council has authorized temporary measures to help reduce financial strain and expedite the permitting process for demolition, restoration and reconstruction of flood-damaged homes, barns and other structures.

  For the next 12 months, for properties identified within the Eligible Properties Area Map, the City will:

  • Prioritize restoration building permits through an “over-the-counter” building permit process;
  • Expedite demolition permits and building permits for structural repairs, with a review and issuance target of two working days or less; 
  • Expedite building permits for reconstruction of accessory structures, such as barns or sheds, with a review and issuance target of five working days, and; 
  • Waive flood restoration building permit and demolition permit fees

  This approach mirrors actions taken following the 2021 flooding, when Abbotsford City Council also waived restoration-related fees to help ease the financial burden on affected residents.

  At this time, Evacuation Orders remain in place for 11 properties, while 474 properties remain under Evacuation Alert.

  As of this morning, the Environment Canada has removed the heavy rain weather alert for Abbotsford. A Flood Warning for the Sumas River remains in effect from the BC River Forecast Centre; however, water levels in the river are slowly receding. Levels of the Nooksack River at North Cedarville continue to decline and are projected to remain well below flood stage.

  Staff in the Emergency Operations Centre and in the field continue to actively monitor river levels, dikes, roads and weather conditions closely. 

• Dec. 16, 2025 - 3:45pm - Evacuation Orders modified for another 25 properties in Sumas Prairie

  The City of Abbotsford has downgraded Evacuation Orders for 25 additional properties in Sumas Prairie. These properties remain on Evacuation Alert and should stay prepared to evacuate at a moment’s notice, should conditions change.  

  Evacuation Orders remain in place for 11 properties, and 474 properties remain under Evacuation Alert. The interactive map, which is searchable by address, has been updated to show the status of all properties in the evacuation area, indicating whether they are under Order or Alert. 

  Of the properties with houses downgraded today from an Evacuation Order to an Evacuation Alert that required a Rapid Damage Assessment, 9 homes were assessed as green, 6 homes were assessed as yellow and no homes were assessed as red. Rapid Damage Assessments were done on homes observed to be impacted by the floodwaters in the lifted Evacuation Order area by City of Abbotsford staff to ensure that people returning home can do so safely.

  Assessments were done on the outer structure of homes only, not the inside or other buildings on the property, such as sheds or barns. Upon returning to their property, residents may want to have their home and other structures further assessed with support of their insurer. • Dec. 16, 2025 - 9:45am - Community Flood Update

  As of December 16, 2025 9:30 a.m.

  As of this morning, Environment Canada has downgraded the heavy rain weather alert for Abbotsford from an orange-level alert to yellow. A Flood Warning for the Sumas River remains in effect from the BC River Forecast Centre; however, water levels in the river are gradually receding. Forecast for the Nooksack River at North Cedarville continue to improve, with levels expected to remain well below flood stage. The Emergency Operations Centre continues to monitor these weather conditions and river projections very closely.

  Crews are out monitoring water levels on roadways, clearing debris and assessing for potential damage. They are also inspecting culverts and bridges in the impacted areas in hopes of reopening more roads today.

  Yesterday, the City downgraded 41 properties from Evacuation Orders to Evacuation Alert. As water levels in Sumas Prairie continue to decline, crews will continue with Rapid Damage Assessments on the remaining properties under Evacuation Order. Residents can check the evacuation status of their property by searching their address on the City’s interactive map, which is kept up to date.

  City crews remain active both in the field and in the Emergency Operations Centre, continuously monitoring dikes, river levels and projections, and weather conditions.
   

• Dec. 15, 2025 - 3:45pm - Evacuation Orders modified for another 39 properties in Sumas Prairie

  The City of Abbotsford has downgraded Evacuation Orders for 39 additional properties in Sumas Prairie. These properties remain on Evacuation Alert and should stay prepared to evacuate at a moment’s notice, should conditions change.  

  Evacuation Orders remain in place for 36 properties, and 449 properties remain under Evacuation Alert. The interactive map, which is searchable by address, has been updated to show the status of all properties in the evacuation area, indicating whether they are under Order or Alert.

  Rapid Damage Assessments were done on homes observed to be impacted by the floodwaters in the lifted Evacuation Order area by City of Abbotsford staff to ensure that people returning home can do so safely. Rapid Damage Assessments advise whether or not the structure of a home is safe to re-enter or if additional work is required before it is safe to do so. Homes that required assessment have a placard to advise them of their assessment results and where to call for additional support should it be required.

  Of the properties downgraded from an Evacuation Order to an Evacuation Alert that required a Rapid Damage Assessment, 292 homes were assessed as green, 16 homes were assessed as yellow and no homes were assessed as red.

  Assessments were done on the outer structure of homes only, not the inside or other buildings on the property, such as sheds or barns. Upon returning to their property, residents may want to have their home and other structures further assessed with support of their insurer.

  Residents and businesses impacted by the evacuations are encouraged to visit the Return Home information page for resources and guidance to support the return to their properties and as they turn to agencies, insurers and other levels of government for support.

  A significant number of roads have been reopened in Sumas Prairie with several others reopening for local traffic only. • Dec. 15, 11:45am - Evacuation Orders modified for Castle Fun Park and Clarion Hotel

  The City of Abbotsford has downgraded the Evacuation Orders for Castle Fun Park and Clarion Hotel and Conference Centre, moving both properties to Evacuation Alert. Both businesses should remain prepared to evacuate at a moment’s notice, should conditions change.  

  Evacuation Orders remain in place for 75 properties, and 410 properties remain under Evacuation Alert. The interactive map, which is searchable by address, has been updated to show the status of all properties in the evacuation area, indicating whether they are under Order or Alert.

  Rapid Damage Assessments continue for properties in the Evacuation Order area in hopes of lifting more orders later today. Residents and businesses impacted by the evacuations are encouraged to visit the Return Home information page for resources and guidance to support the return to their properties as they turn to agencies, insurers and other levels of government for support.

• Dec. 15, 2025 - 10am - Community Flood Update

  Environment Canada has issued an orange warning level weather alert for Abbotsford for heavy rain, and the BC River Forecast Centre continues their Flood Warning for Sumas River. The Nooksack River overflow water has stopped coming across the Canada/U.S.A. border and the River Forecast at North Cedarville currently projects the river won’t reach flood stage. The City of Abbotsford Emergency Operations Centre continues to monitor weather warnings and water levels closely.

  Crews are assessing culverts, bridges and road conditions and are reopening roads once they are deemed safe to drive. With the forecasted heavy rain, road conditions can change quickly, so drivers are urged to use caution. Highway 1 is expected to fully reopen eastbound between Whatcom Road and Number 3 Road later today.

  Power is out for most of Sumas Prairie due to wind and BC Hydro crews are on the scene. A downed power line has closed Vye Road and Whatcom Road and drivers are asked to avoid the area and follow traffic controls for their safety.

  Late yesterday, the City downgraded the status of 248 properties in Sumas Prairie from Evacuation Orders to Evacuation Alert. Residents on Evacuation Alert should remain prepared to evacuate at a moment’s notice, should conditions change. The interactive map, which is searchable by address, has been updated to show the status of properties in the evacuation area.

  Rapid Damage Assessments continue today by City of Abbotsford staff on the remaining properties under Evacuation Order, in the hopes of lifting more orders as soon as safely possible. Residents preparing to return to their properties are encouraged to visit the City’s Return Home information page for resources and guidance on the return home process, as they turn to agencies, insurers and other levels of government for support.   The Ministry of Agriculture and Food continues to work with the City of Abbotsford Emergency Operations and are advising that commercial farms that have experienced loss of livestock contact their industry association. Non-commercial and other farms should contact the AgriServiceBC phone line 1-888-221-7141 .

  The Emergency Operations Centre remains active today as staff continue closely monitoring river levels, dikes, roads and weather conditions. If subsequent evacuations are necessary, new alerts or orders will be issued. 

• Dec. 14, 2025 - 4pm - Evacuation orders modified for additional properties in Sumas Prairie

  The City of Abbotsford has downgraded Evacuation Orders for 248 properties in Sumas Prairie. These properties remain on Evacuation Alert at this time. As a Flood Warning remains in effect for Sumas River, and heavy rain is expected tomorrow, residents on Evacuation Alert should remain prepared to evacuate at a moment’s notice, should conditions change.

  Properties impacted by this change are in the eastern portion of the existing Evacuation Order from Sumas Dike/Marion Road west to most properties accessible from Whatcom Road and most properties south of the Sumas River. The change also includes all properties north of Sumas Dike from Lakeview Street to Barrowtown. These properties are only accessible from No. 3 Road at this time due to road closures.

  The following properties north of Highway 1 are also downgraded from Evacuation Order to Evacuation Alert:

  • 1920 North Parallel Road (businesses in Parallel Marketplace)
  • 36263 North Parallel Road
  • 36299 North Parallel Road
  • 2221 Fooks Road
  • 35995 North Parallel Road

  Evacuation Orders remain in place for 77 properties and 408 properties remain under Evacuation Alert. The interactive map, which is searchable by address, has been updated to show the status of all properties in the evacuation area, indicating whether they are under Order or Alert.

  Rapid Damage Assessments were done on homes observed to be impacted by the floodwaters in the lifted Evacuation Order area by City of Abbotsford staff and Canada Task Force 1 to ensure that people returning home can do so safely. Rapid Damage Assessments advise whether or not the structure of a home is safe to re-enter or if additional work is required before it is safe to do so. Homes that required assessment have a placard to advise them of their assessment results and where to call for additional support should it be required. Placard categories include:

  • Green: Re-entry permitted, at your discretion, if the building is not located within an Evacuation Order area.
  • Yellow: Access is restricted subject to varying conditions. Further information is provided on the placard.
  • Red: Do not enter the building unless authorization has been granted by the appropriate authorities.

  Of the properties downgraded from an Evacuation Order to an Evacuation Alert that required a Rapid Damage Assessment, 278 homes were assessed as green, 9 home was assessed as yellow and no homes were assessed as red. Assessments were done on the outer structure of homes only, not the inside or other buildings on the property, such as sheds or barns. Upon returning to their property, residents may want to have their home and other structures further assessed with support of their insurer.

  If a home does not have a placard and is not located in the current Evacuation Order, residents are permitted to reenter at their discretion.

  With residents’ continued safety in mind, the City has launched our Return Home information page to support those returning to their homes and businesses. The page is meant to provide residents with information and guidance in the days following their return home as they turn to agencies, insurers and other levels of government for support. Residents can email floodrecovery@abbotsford.ca with general flood recovery questions and call 604-504-4049 with building assessment inquiries.

  The Emergency Operations Centre remains active, and staff will continue closely monitoring river levels, dikes, and roads. We also continue to closely monitor upcoming weather conditions as more rain is predicted in the coming week. If subsequent evacuation is necessary, a new alert or order will be issued.

• Dec. 14, 2025 - 10am Community Flood Update

  As of this morning, the floodwaters in Abbotsford continue to gradually recede with some areas seeing notable improvement. There is still overflow water coming across the Canada/U.S.A. border from the Nooksack River, but the amount of water is decreasing at this time.

  Last night, the City of Abbotsford lifted existing Evacuation Alerts and downgraded Evacuation Orders for some properties to Evacuation Alerts. The interactive map has been updated to show the status of properties in the evacuation area. The map is searchable by address.

  Rapid Damage Assessments continue today by City of Abbotsford staff and Canada Task Force 1 to ensure that people returning home can do so safely. Roads, culverts and bridges are also being inspected. Returning home after a flooding event can be difficult. To support residents, the City of Abbotsford has launched a Return Home information page at abbotsford.ca/returnhome. This page provides information and guidance for residents in the days following their return home, as they turn to agencies, insurers and other levels of government for support. We also continue to closely monitor upcoming weather conditions as more rain is predicted in the coming week. If subsequent evacuations are necessary, new alerts or orders will be issued.
   

• Dec. 13, 2025 - 7:30pm Existing Evacuation Alerts lifted and Evacuation Orders modified

  The City of Abbotsford has lifted existing Evacuation Alerts for 1,069 properties in Sumas Prairie West and Sumas Prairie East. In addition, a total of 160 properties have been downgraded from an Evacuation Order to an Evacuation Alert. This includes most properties in the western portion of the Evacuation Order area up to Angus Campbell Road, including Huntingdon Village, as well as some properties north of Hwy 1. Evacuation Orders remain in place for 325 properties throughout Sumas Prairie.

  The interactive map has been updated to show exactly which properties remain under an Evacuation Order or downgraded to an Evacuation Alert. The map is searchable by address.

  Rapid Damage Assessments were done on homes observed to be impacted by the floodwaters in the lifted Evacuation Order area by City of Abbotsford staff and Canada Task Force 1 to ensure that people returning home can do so safely. Rapid Damage Assessments advise whether or not the structure of a home is safe to re-enter or if additional work is required before it is safe to do so. • Dec. 13, 2025 - 10am - Flood Update to the Community

  December 13, 2025 10am Update:

  As of this morning, the floodwaters in Abbotsford continued to gradually recede with some areas seeing significant improvement. There is still overflow water coming across the border from the Nooksack River, but the amount of water is slowly decreasing.

  Highway 1 remains closed and drivers are asked not to attempt to bypass flooded areas using side roads. Those are also flooded and you will get stuck trying to back out. There is currently no way through Abbotsford to Chilliwack or eastern parts of the province. Monitor DriveBC for all of the latest road conditions.

  Evacuation Orders remain in place for 460 properties with 82 in Huntingdon Village, 371 in Sumas Prairie West and 7 north of Hwy 1 near Parallel Marketplace. Evacuation Alerts remain in place for 1,069 properties in Sumas Prairie East and Sumas Prairie West. An interactive map remains up to date so residents can use the search function to confirm whether their property is impacted. Work is underway with our Return Home Plan to support residents who are under an Evacuation Order to return home as quickly as possible.

  Rapid Damage Assessments have started with the support of staff and Canada Task Force 1. These assessments advise whether or not the structure of a home is safe to re-enter or if additional work is required before it is safe to do so. Each home will have a placard on the door to advise them of their assessment results and where to call for additional support should it be required. These are an important step in determining when evacuation orders can be lifted. 

  The Emergency Operations Centre remains active and staff will continue closely monitoring river levels, dikes, and roads. We are also closely monitoring upcoming weather conditions with more rain to come. 

• Dec. 12, 2025 - 1pm - Flood Update to the Community

  This morning Mayor Siemens joined Kelly Greene, BC Minister of Emergency Management and Climate Readiness and Lana Popham, BC Minister of Agriculture and Food for an update on the flood situation in Abbotsford.

  As of this morning, the floodwaters in Abbotsford have peaked and have begun to gradually recede. There is still overflow water coming across the border from the Nooksack River, but the amount of water is slowly decreasing.

  As the water level of the Fraser River has also decreased, the floodgates at Barrowtown Pump Station are open, which is helping to move floodwater out of the Sumas River and into the Fraser.

  However, there is still a lot of water, impacting hundreds of properties in our community. There are also a number of significant road closures and people are advised to stay away from any water-covered roads.

  City staff are currently working on Return Home plans to get people back into their homes as soon as possible. The Emergency Operations Centre remains active and staff will continue closely monitoring river levels, dikes and road conditions.

  4:45 pm - Update following news conference

  Following today’s news conference, where Mayor Siemens called on the federal government to take action and provide critical flood mitigation support to the City of Abbotsford, the federal Minister of Emergency Management and Community Resilience, Eleanor Olszewski, requested to meet with him. 

  They met this afternoon and the Minister asked how the federal government can support the City of Abbotsford in our flood response. Mayor Siemens reiterated his frustration and concern for timely support and the urgent long-term flood mitigation needs of our community and asked that they actively work with the Province of BC to address the flooding risks impacting Abbotsford. He also asked that they start to participate and play an active role at the leadership table for the Sumas River Watershed Flood Mitigation Plan working group as this work has national and international impact. The Minister advised of potential future grant opportunities that the City may be able to consider.

  Mayor Siemens appreciates the Minister reaching out and hopes this time is different and that the Federal Government takes our requests seriously.

• Dec. 11, 2025, 8:30pm - Highway 1 closed between Sumas Way and No. 3 road and evacuation orders expanded

  Out of concern for public safety, the Ministry of Transportation and Transit has closed Highway 1 from Sumas Way to No. 3 road due to floodwater on the highway.

  The City of Abbotsford has issued new Evacuation Orders for seven properties north of Highway 1, including the Clarion Hotel (36035 N. Parallel Road), the Ministry of Agriculture and Foods building (1767 Angus Campbell Road) 1920 North Parallel Road, 2054 Whatcom Road, 2111 Whatcom Road, 35388 Delair Road and Delair Park (35570 Old Yale Road). Evacuation Orders remain in place for 82 properties in Huntingdon Village and 371 properties in Sumas Prairie West and Evacuation Alerts remain in place for 1,069 properties in Sumas Prairie East and West.

  An interactive map showing the active evacuation alerts and orders is available on the City’s website. Residents can use the search function to confirm whether their property is impacted. Abbotsford Fire Rescue Services, Abbotsford Police Department and others are in the evacuation areas to ensure evacuated properties are aware of the Order and are assisting with the evacuation where needed.

• Dec. 11, 2025 - 6:25 pm - Floodwaters expected to peak within the next 12 hours

  Floodwaters in Sumas Prairie and Huntingdon Village are expected to peak within the next 12 hours. Water levels on the Abbotsford side of the border continue to rise and based on current modelling and data from the 1990 flood event, water is anticipated to reach Highway 1 late this evening or early tomorrow morning.

  Evacuation Orders remain in place for 82 properties in Huntingdon Village and 371 properties in Sumas Prairie West. Evacuation Alerts remain in place for 1,069 properties in Sumas Prairie East and West and residents are encouraged to prepare in case they are required to leave their homes.

  Residents are strongly urged to stay out of the evacuation areas, away from floodwater and off all flooded or water-covered roads for their own safety and to ease strain on emergency responders.

  The Emergency Operations Centre is continuously monitoring available data and modelling and remains in constant communication with Whatcom County and the Province of BC. While the River Forecast at North Cedarville shows the Nooksack River has peaked and levels are now dropping, overflow waters are still flowing towards Abbotsford.

• Dec. 11, 2025 - 11am - Floodwaters cross into Abbotsford and Evacuation Orders expanded

  As floodwaters from the Nooksack River have now started crossing into Abbotsford, the City of Abbotsford has issued new Evacuation Orders for 82 properties in Huntingdon Village, up to 2nd Ave. and Sumas Way. An Evacuation Order remains in place for 371 properties in Sumas Prairie West and Evacuation Alerts remain in place for 1,069 properties in Sumas Prairie East and West. The Evacuation Alert for Clayburn Village has been lifted. Residents are reminded to stay away from waterways and to avoid driving across water-covered roads or bridges.

  The Emergency Operations Centre remained operational overnight to continue monitoring flood conditions, water gauges and new information provided by Whatcom County and the Province of BC. The River Forecast at North Cedarville shows the Nooksack River reached major flood stage and peaked at the gauge at 3 a.m. today. Based on the latest data, this flooding event is tracking similarly to the 1990 flood, which was a lesser event than 2021. 

  An interactive map showing the active evacuation alerts and orders is available on the City’s website. Residents can use the search function to confirm whether their property is impacted. Abbotsford Fire Rescue Services, Abbotsford Police Department and others were out throughout the night knocking on doors and advising residents with Evacuation Orders.

  A total of 15 families spent the night at the Reception Centre at the Abbotsford Recreation Centre (2499 McMillan Road). The Reception Centre will remain open to provide immediate shelter and assistance for residents impacted by these orders. We ask that all evacuated residents check in with the Reception Centre either in person or online within 24 hours.

  Farmers have been working through the night to remove livestock from the area. A total of 165 farming operations with livestock are currently in the evacuation area, 66 of those under Evacuation Order. We recognize the stress these farmers are under and remind dairy and poultry producers to reach out to their industry association and Ministry of Agriculture and Foods (af.em@gov.bc.ca) for available support.

  Crews are currently responding to a landslide on the south-east corner of Sumas Prairie, which is currently impacting one property as well as the SRY rail line.

  The Sumas Canada/U.S.A. border remains closed for US-bound traffic and the Ministry of Transportation and Transit continues to monitor the highways and will provide updates.

  We are aware that an old evacuation order from 2021 is circulating online, which is causing undue panic and concern for many residents. All current evacuation alerts, orders and notices, as well as all the latest available information is posted on our website at www.abbotsford.ca. The website is kept up to date and residents are advised to check the site to confirm whether notices they might see online are accurate or current. 

  Sand and sandbags are available at Albert Dyck Park at 31515 Walmsley Avenue (please bring your own shovel).

• Dec. 10, 2025 - 11pm - Evacuation Orders issued for parts of Sumas Prairie West and Evacuation Alert issued for Sumas Prairie East

  The City of Abbotsford has declared a State of Local Emergency and has issued an evacuation order for 371 properties in Sumas Prairie West due to risk of flooding. Residents in the affected area must leave immediately. Evacuation Alerts have also been issued for Sumas Prairie East and remain in place for the rest of Sumas Prairie West and Clayburn Village.

  This direction follows extensive conversations with the Province of BC and Whatcom County and is based on the best modelling data available at this time, which predicts the Nooksack River to crest at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s major flood stage. Flood water is expected to arrive at the border in the early hours of Thursday morning (Dec 11).

  An interactive map showing the active evacuation alerts and orders is available on this webpage. Residents can use the search function to confirm whether their property is impacted. Abbotsford Fire Rescue Service, Abbotsford Police Department and others are in the evacuation area advising properties impacted by the order to ensure they are informed and are supporting the evacuation.

  A Reception Centre has been established at the Abbotsford Recreation Centre (2499 McMillan Road) to provide immediate shelter and assistance for residents impacted by these orders. We ask that all evacuated residents check in with the Reception Centre either in person or online within 24 hours.

  What you should do if you need to evacuate:

  • Gather your family and, if you have room, take a neighbour or someone needing transportation.  
  • Take critical items (medicine, purse, wallet, and keys) only if they are immediately available.
  • Take pets in pet kennels or on leash.
  • Shut off all gas and electrical appliances, other than refrigerators and freezers.
  • Close all windows and doors.
  • Close gates (latch) but do not lock.
  • Follow main roads out of the evacuation area and register at the Reception Centre at Abbotsford Recreation Centre (2499 McMillan Road).

  Farmers under Evacuation Order who are concerned about their livestock can reach out to their Industry associations for support as they are in contact with the Ministry of Agriculture.

  At 7:15 p.m. this evening, the Ministry of Transportation and Transit issued a travel advisory for the Fraser Valley asking people to avoid unnecessary travel and advising that Highway 1 and other provincial roadways could be closed with little or no notice. Highway 11 at the Sumas border crossing is currently closed to commercial traffic, allowing local traffic only.

• Dec, 10, 2025 - 4pm - Evacuation Alerts issued for Sumas Prairie West and Clayburn Village

  This follows a Flood Warning issued earlier today by the BC River Forecast Centre and further conversations with the Province of BC based on their modelling information which shows that the flooding may be more than what was seen in 2020 but not as significant as the 2021 event.

  The City of Abbotsford remains in contact with Whatcom County. The Nooksack River is expected to overtop its banks this afternoon and overflow water will take approximately 7 hours to cross the Canada/U.S.A. border based on past experience. 

  The most potentially impacted properties will receive hand-delivered notices from Abbotsford Fire Rescue Service, Abbotsford Police Department and others.

  Residents in Sumas Prairie West and Clayburn Village are encouraged to plan ahead should they need to evacuate. 

  Crews are actively monitoring river levels, dikes and road conditions closely. Crews will be closing Cole Road at the dike, between Wellsline Road and Vye Road later this evening.

  Be prepared:

  • Clear storm drains and gutters of leaves and debris to help prevent water buildup
  • Avoid driving across water-covered roads or bridges
  • Sand and sandbags are available outside the City of Abbotsford Public Works Yard at 31739 King Road (please bring your own shovel)

• Dec. 10, 2025 - 11 am - Update on Heavy Rain and Flood Warning

  The current heavy rainfall has resulted in localized flooding in low-lying areas in Abbotsford. The BC River Forecast Centre has recently upgraded their advisory to a Flood Warning for the Fraser Valley as rain is expected to continue throughout the day.

  The City of Abbotsford is in contact with and receiving regular updates from Whatcom County on the status of the Nooksack River. At this time this weather event is expected to be similar to flooding experienced during the February 2020 Nooksack overflow. Information about  water levels can be found at the Whatcom County's Forecasts & Current River Conditions website and River Forecast at North Cedarville.

  Should the Nooksack River overtop its banks, we expect overland flow from the U.S.A could impact Vye, Boundary and Angus Campbell roads at various locations near the Canada/U.S.A. border. Historically, it has taken approximately 7 hours for the water to reach Abbotsford.

  The City of Abbotsford has established an Emergency Operations Centre to continue monitoring the river levels, snowmelt and dikes closely and ensure all possible support is in place should it be required. We are also in contact with the Province of BC as they provide modeling of the Fraser River which helps to inform how Barrowtown Pump Station is operated. City staff are stationed 24/7 at Barrowtown and throughout the community providing around-the-clock support. We are preparing to close roads at low spots later today.
