As the populations of Abbotsford and Mission grow, we need to ensure our regional water supply and infrastructure meet the needs of our growing populations.
The Abbotsford Mission Water & Sewer Commission (AMWSC) supplies municipal water to Abbotsford, Mission, as well as a small part of the Fraser Valley Regional District. This system consists of two surface water sources and treatment plants (Norrish Creek and Cannell Lake), 19 groundwater wells in the City of Abbotsford, 88 km of transmission mains, and two reservoirs.
Abbotsford’s Official Community Plan (OCP), adopted in June 2016, provides a vision and a framework for how Abbotsford will grow to a population of 200,000. We are now reviewing and updating existing Master Plans and Studies to ensure all of our future operations, development, infrastructure, services, amenities and programs align with the vision set out in our OCP.
The existing combined water supply is nearing its capacity and it is estimated that additional water and/or reduced consumption through conservation measures will be needed within the next 5-10 years to allow for development in both communities. This Master Plan includes developing water use projections, identifying the needed capacity to accommodate the projected water demand, and developing a solution set consisting of a combination water conservation, system optimization, and a new source that will meet the AMWSC’s needs for the for the next 25 years and beyond.
STAGE 1 - BACKGROUND RESEARCH
The background research provided the data needed to move to our next phase where we will explore options and develop new solution sets.
STAGE 2 - DEVELOPING WATER SUPPLY SOLUTION SETS
During Stage 2, we reviewed information gathered from Stage 1, and developed the solution set options that we will be coming to you to get your opinions and feedback on these Supply options.
STAGE 3 - REFINEMENT OF SOLUTION SETS
We are compiling the research and feedback we receive from stage 2 to refine our solution sets.
STAGE 4 - FINAL PLAN
Details will be coming soon regarding Stage 4!
