The City of Abbotsford’s committees and boards provide vital input for Council to consider before making decisions that affect the community.

As our 2022-2026 Council term starts to wind down, we’d like to take a moment to thank all the community members who volunteered their time to serve on City committees and boards.

Committees and boards bring residents, subject matter experts and other interested parties together to discuss issues and programs and to be a liaison and communication channel between the community and City Council.

The City of Abbotsford has eight volunteer committees and boards:

  1. The Abbotsford Airport Authority, which oversees the management, operation and development of Abbotsford International Airport.
  2. The Accessibility and Equity Advisory Committee, which advises Council on how to make City services and facilities more accessible by reducing and preventing barriers.
  3. The Agriculture Advisory Committee, which advises Council on agricultural issues.
  4. The Board of Variance, an independent body with the authority to grant zoning variances in cases where the City's Zoning Bylaw is causing undue hardship.
  5. The Business, Innovation and Public Affairs Advisory Committee, which acts as a liaison between the community and Council in areas including government relations, legislative affairs, economic development and innovation.
  6. The Community, Culture and Environment Advisory Committee, which serves as a communication channel between the community and Council in areas related to culture, recreation, the environment and green strategies.
  7. The Development, Transportation and Infrastructure Advisory Committee, which facilitates discussions between Council and the community related to land use, transportation, infrastructure, heritage development, bylaw and policy development, and master plans and strategies.
  8. The Public Safety Advisory Committee, which advises Council on current and emerging public safety issues.

These committees and boards give interested residents and community representatives a way to participate in local government in a more substantial way by sharing their specialized knowledge, expertise and lived experience. Committee members can also alert Council to opportunities, concerns or trends affecting the community.

The decisions made at the Council table have a direct impact on our residents and businesses. That is why it is essential that we hear from informed community representatives whose perspectives can help to shape and guide our decision-making.

The commitment and dedication of community volunteers assist Council in the governance of the City and makes Abbotsford a community where people choose to live, work, play and invest. We are sincerely grateful for their dedication to our community.

Appointments to Council committees and boards are made by City Council every two years, or as vacancies arise. Terms of appointments are two years to a maximum of six consecutive years on any one committee, unless otherwise resolved by Council. The next opportunity for participation in a committee or board will be January 2027 following the municipal election in the fall.
