Blasting Permits

A Blasting Permit is required prior to all blasting. Blasting in the City of Abbotsford is regulated under Bylaw No. 1941-2010.

Blasting permits help ensure public safety, property protection, regulatory compliance, and proper engineering oversight.

Important Notes

  • Blasting must only carry out blasting Monday to Friday between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m.
  • Blasting companies are to notify properties within a radius of 100 m of blast area. Notification outlines the date and time, anticipated duration, and an explanation of what blasting signals will be used and the meaning.
  • Demonstrate commercial general liability and property damage insurance in an amount not less than $5 million for any claims which may arise from the proposed blasting.

Quarry Blasting on Sumas Mountain

This issuance of blasting permits for the quarry (which is considered a mine) is under Provincial jurisdiction – Ministry of Energy, Mines & Petroleum Resources.  Therefore the City does not have jurisdiction, and does not issue blasting permits for the quarries.  Soil Removal Permits are issued by the City’s Engineering Department.

The City cannot regulate blasting at the quarry, so we did endeavor to have a means for addressing blasting issues by requesting a website be created (www.blastingschedule.com) to provide residences with the schedule as well as the “contact us” feature for any concerns.”

View the current schedule and find information about contacting the operator with questions or concerns.
