Advanced Metering Infrastructure Replacement Program
The City of Abbotsford began replacing its Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) Water Meter System in May 2023. This upgraded system enables remote water meter readings, which helps the City better anticipate water demand, detect leaks early, and allows residents to monitor their water usage more effectively.
The replacement work is currently ongoing and installations, which includes replacing the meter interface unit (MIU), antenna and lid for each water meter box, are currently being carried out by Engineering Operations crews throughout Abbotsford. Residential meters are typically located near the property line, often at driveways or front lawns. Commercial meters are usually found at the property line as well, though some may be located inside utility rooms.
There will be no interruption to your water service during the replacement. You do not need to take any action to prepare. Crews will not need to turn off your water or enter your home.
During this transition, your water bill may be estimated based on previous usage. Any discrepancies will be corrected with the next actual meter reading.
