The City is now accepting online applications for all building permits including demolitions, tenant improvements, home renovations, agricultural buildings, new residential homes, secondary suites, and swimming pools!
Please ensure to review our building permit application guides and submission checklists to ensure you have all of the required documents ready to make your application. Having the correct documents submitted with your application will contribute to a quicker review and issuance of your building permit; missing the correct documents may result in your application being rejected and application fees being forfeited.

BC Building Code Changes
The 2024 BC Building Code changes will take effect on March 8, 2024. This means that all permit applications made on or after March 8, 2024 will be subject to the 2024 BC Building Code, which requires all documents, designs, and references to be updated to reflect the new Code. View Details
Building Permits
Building permits ensure that buildings and structures renovated or constructed within the City of Abbotsford meet the acceptable level of performance with regards to structure, occupant health, fire protection, life safety, accessibility and energy efficiency. Building permits also ensure that the community’s applicable land use and development bylaws are applied. While contractors may be hired to complete construction work, it is the property owner’s responsibility to ensure that a building permit is obtained prior to construction commencing.

When a Permit is Not Required
While most building construction projects will require a permit, there is some work that does not require a permit for example:
- Most buildings that are less than 10m2 in area;
- Replacement of sinks, faucets, or toilets (provided their location does not change);
- Replacement of siding, gutters, or roof shingles; or
- Painting, flooring, and/or installation of cabinetry.
