Building Permits

Building permits ensure that buildings and structures renovated or constructed within the City of Abbotsford meet the acceptable level of performance with regards to structure, occupant health, fire protection, life safety, accessibility and energy efficiency. Building permits also ensure that the community’s applicable land use and development bylaws are applied. While contractors may be hired to complete construction work, it is the property owner’s responsibility to ensure that a building permit is obtained prior to construction commencing.

Inspections

Once the permit has been issued, inspection of the work onsite occurs to confirm that it aligns with the approved permit drawings, construction regulations, and bylaws. To book and prepare for an inspection, please follow the link below.

When a Permit is Not Required

While most building construction projects will require a permit, there is some work that does not require a permit for example:

  • Most buildings that are less than 10m2 in area;
  • Replacement of sinks, faucets, or toilets (provided their location does not change);
  • Replacement of siding, gutters, or roof shingles; or
  • Painting, flooring, and/or installation of cabinetry.

If you are unsure if your project requires a permit, please feel free to review the City’s Building Bylaw or contact one of our team members who would be happy to assist you.
