Commercial Truck Parking

The Background Research Report discussed the current state of Commercial Truck Parking within the City of Abbotsford. It began with examining the ‘Big Picture’, and this section of the report looked into the regional issues such as the cost of industrial land, and how that has impacted the Commercial Trucking industry, and its ability to legally park trucks within the City of Abbotsford. The other major component of the document explored the local context and discussed how the growth in the local trucking industry coupled with finite industrial land has led to unauthorized truck parking issues.

In Stage 2, staff created 6 proposed emerging solutions and then undertook an engagement process which consisted of three key activities. The first activity was a stakeholder workshop held in a World Café format, and this was followed by an online open house hosted through Let’s Talk Abbotsford and the final activity consisted of staff hosting two in-person open houses. Based on background research, community and stakeholder input, existing policies and plans, and provincial mandates, staff proposed 5 strategies for Council to consider within the Draft Strategy.

In Stage 3, a Final Strategy was prepared for Council’s consideration. The Final Strategy consisted of 5 strategies that were shaped by background research, community and stakeholder input, existing policies and plans, and provincial mandates. An Implementation Plan was also included as part of this document. The Commercial Truck Parking Strategy was endorsed by City Council on April 8th, 2025.
