Canada Day Artist Demonstration Guidelines

We recognize and respect that the City of Abbotsford is on the traditional, shared territory of the Stó:lō Peoples: Sema:th, Leq’á:mel  and Matheqwí First Nations. As a City, we are learning and building relationships with the people whose lands we are on.


The City of Abbotsford, in partnership with the Abbotsford Arts Council, is looking for three artists to be a part of our Canada Day family festival at Abbotsford Exhibition Park on July 1, 2022

Project Goals and Background

Celebrate Canada, Celebrate Community!

2022 will be a very special year for our community as we gather safely in-person. Our community celebration begins with a two-hour parade along our main street, family festival at the Abbotsford Exhibition Park, with interactive play zones, main stage entertainment, a multicultural themed food truck festival and fireworks finale!

We are currently looking for artists to participate in our Community Showcase Zone on July 1st from 1pm – 5pm. During this time, artists are asked to work on a piece of art, demonstrating their artistic practice and engage with the community.

A 10x10 foot tent will be provided to the selected Artists to create in. Please note that there is no access to power.

Applications from Artists from the following communities are encouraged:
  • Indigenous Artists
  • Culturally Diverse* Artists
  • Deaf Artists and Artists with disabilities
  • 2SLGBTQIA+ Artists
  • New generation and emerging Artists
*Culturally diverse communities are defined as racialized groups that correspond to “visible minorities” under the federal Employment Equity Act. These are individuals of African, Asian, Latin American, Middle Eastern or mixed ancestral heritage that includes at least one of these groups.

For the purposes of this program, “the Artist” may be: an Artist or collective of Artists working in interdisciplinary art, social practice art, installation, visual art (photography, film and video, painting, print-making, drawing, sculpture, crafting), performance arts (theatre, dance,etc .), music (creation, production, performance) or writing. The work(s) of art created and the community engagement may fall into any of these categories or multiple categories.


  • Artist must be 19 years or older.

Selection Process and Assessment Criteria

A selection committee that includes a representative from the City of Abbotsford Culture Division and the Abbotsford Arts Council will review applications. The following criteria will be used to evaluate and shortlist the Artists:
  • Adherence to application submission requirements;
  • Demonstrated artistic experience;
  • Quality of work and suitability of project for event;
  • The potential quality and impact of the work(s) of art on the community; and
  • Ability to engage with the community about their creative practice through dialogue and demonstration.

Final Selection
The selection panel will award the opportunity to the selected Artists based on the program criteria.

Please note, the Panel is not obligated to select any Artist if, in the opinion of the Panel, no applicant meets the qualifications and expectations of the program.

Artist Fees

The chosen Artists will receive a total of $500 each.

Applications will be accepted via the online form. Access to this form can be found here: When applying you are unable to save your submission and return at a later time. Please ensure that you have all of the below prepared to upload:
  • Artist CV (Maximum of 2 Pages)
  • Artist Biography and Statement of Interest (Maximum 1 page, including artist bio and outlining why you are interested in the opportunity and description of your artwork demonstration).
  • Samples of Work  (Maximum of 5 images, audio files, and/or video files. Video and Audio files are to be no longer than 5 minutes. URL links will be accepted to media files with clear description of how to access.)
File Specifications
  • All files must be windows compatible. JPEG, PNG, MP3 and MP4 files are preferred.
  • Files should be clearly labelled with your name, title of work, medium.
Ex. Name-title-medium.jpg.
