For her commitment to education and volunteerism, as well as her dedication to the community, Sylvia Peary is the 2021 recipient of the Order of Abbotsford.
For the past 50 years, Sylvia Peary has been a valuable community contributor in the City of Abbotsford. Through her ongoing commitment to education, passion for bringing people together, and desire for serving her community, Sylvia has left a lasting impact on our community.
For 35 years Sylvia was an Abbotsford high school Career and Business Preparation teacher and led the Business and Counselling Departments at several schools. She has also played an integral role as a volunteer and leader with a number of organizations, including but not limited to the Abbotsford BC Summer Games (2016), Abbotsford BC Seniors Games (2006), Abbotsford BC Disability Games (2002) and for 20 years as a contractor with the Skills BC competition. As a teacher, lifelong learner and extraordinary volunteer and leader, the City of Abbotsford has greatly benefited from Sylvia’s passion for bringing people together and mentoring students and volunteers.
“On behalf of Abbotsford City Council, I am very pleased to recognize Sylvia Peary with the Order of Abbotsford," said Mayor Henry Braun. "For many years, Sylvia has worked tirelessly as an extraordinary teacher and volunteer who continually gave of her time and effort for the benefit of the Abbotsford community.”
The Order of Abbotsford is bestowed to an individual who has demonstrated a particularly high level of contribution or length of service to Abbotsford and its residents, and who has brought distinction to themselves and the community through outstanding achievements in a variety of areas, including but not limited to: culture, public or community service, the environment, business, heritage conservation, and sports.
Recipients of the Order of Abbotsford have their names recorded in the Order of Abbotsford Merit Book, which is maintained by the Office of the Mayor. The Order of Abbotsford award ceremony will be hosted on October 18th for invited guests.
