Compostables Consultation

Please Note: The FVRD’s Source Separation Bylaw and the City’s Solid Waste Collection Bylaw come into effect on April 1, 2020. However, due to the disruption and concerns the Covid-19 virus (coronavirus) is already causing to businesses and to residents, the City will be postponing the promotion and enforcement of the new waste sorting requirements. Instead, the City will be focusing efforts on education and gaining compliance over time, as opposed to any immediate enforcement considerations. The City will continue to work with residents, stratas, businesses and haulers to continue to support waste diversion efforts across our City. For more information, visit

About the Compostables Consultation

The City of Abbotsford is developing composting requirements for the multi-family and industrial, commercial, and institutional (ICI) sectors that will align with the Fraser Valley Regional District (FVRD) initiative to implement sorting requirements across the region for all sectors. Residents in townhouses, condos, apartments and other multi-family residences, as well as businesses and institutions will need to begin collecting food waste separately from garbage and recyclables. The new sorting requirements will come into effect April 1, 2020.

Stage 1 – Initial Consultation

Stage 1 is now complete. Public consultation sessions were held in January and February 2018 so business owners, strata management organizations, property management companies, residents and waste service providers could provide feedback on the City’s proposed program requirements. The following presentations were given:

Consultation feedback was summarized and presented to Council in the Executive Meeting on April 23, 2018.  A copy of the report and meeting minutes is provided below.

Stage 2 – Finalize Program Requirements

Stage 2 is now complete. The FVRD Board approved the Source Separation Bylaw in September 2018. The City’s Solid Waste Collection Bylaw will be updated in the coming months to align with the requirements adopted by the FVRD. What this means in Abbotsford is that multi-family and ICI properties that are not currently collecting compostable waste separately from regular garbage will be required to do so by April 1, 2020. These properties will continue to make their own arrangements with a private waste hauler for the collection and disposal of all waste streams, including compostable waste.

Stage 3 – Education and Support

Stage 3 is currently in progress. During this stage focus will be placed on providing education and support to strata managers, property managers, businesses and residents in preparation for program implementation.

In July and August, the City and the Fraser Valley Regional District co-hosted four information sessions for strata managers, property managers and business owners to provide an update on the implementation timeline for waste sorting requirements and to highlight available resources. A copy of the presentation provided during the info sessions can be viewed online.

Between August and November, the City is hosting sixteen waste sorting workshops for residents to hear about the upcoming waste sorting requirements and to learn information and tips on what goes where. All waste sorting workshops will be held at the Matsqui Centennial Auditorium (32315 South Fraser Way, adjacent to City Hall).  Workshops are free to attend but registration is required. All workshops are currently full. Additional sessions are being planned for Spring 2020 pending staff and facility availability. Any new sessions will be posted on this webpage so please check back in early 2020 for availability.

Please visit the resources section to view a list of resources currently available to assist with program implementation. Information on this webpage will be updated periodically as new resources become available.

Stage 4 – Program Implementation

Program implementation will initially focus on education and support before gradually moving towards monitoring and enforcement. Putting new sorting systems in place takes time and may require staff, tenant or resident training and education. We recommend you contact your waste hauler and start discussing what will work best for your property. Don’t wait to #SortItOut!
