In 2008, the City of Abbotsford along with a local resident, Mr. Riekman, created the first Abbotsford Community Garden at Angus Campbell Park. The project included providing room in the greenhouse as a tool storage area and public washroom facility, preparing the site, staking out 34 plots, providing well water to the gardeners, and constructing 2 raised plots for the physically challenged.
In 2009, The Abbotsford Community Garden Society and the City of Abbotsford constructed and managed 77 garden plots, with many more interested residents joining the waitlist.
Recently, the Parks, Recreation & Culture Commission approved the expansion of the Community Garden for the 2010 season. The Abbotsford Community Garden Society expects to rent 118 10’x20’ garden plots and an additional 33 10’x10’ garden plots.
In addition to the regular plot rentals, the Abbotsford Community Gardens Society and the City of Abbotsford are participating with the Ag in the Classroom program. Four Abbotsford school classes will use a block of land to learn how to grow produce.
The City of Abbotsford wishes to thank Mr. Riekman for his efforts and commitment to the Community Garden project.
