Swim Lesson Registration

The Abbotsford Recreation Centre and Matsqui Recreation Centre both offer the Red Cross Swim lesson sets. Prices average from $28 - $78 per set depending on the length and level of lesson.

Parent & Preschool Swim Lessons (4mo - 36mo)

Starfish (4mo - 12mo)
The goal in this orientation to water class is to experience buoyancy, movement, entries, songs and play in the water and to teach the parent/caregiver age specific water safety.

Duck (12 - 24 mo.)
Swimmers learn how to use floating objects for support and explore different water movements through games, song, and active water play.

Sea Turtle (24mo - 36mo.)
Swimmers learn through fun, games and songs, how to combine skills, how to kick with a buoyant object and how to perform basic floats glides and kicks.

Preschool Swim Lessons (3yrs - 6yrs)

Sea Otter Preschool 1 (3yrs - 5yrs) 
Using games and activities, swimmers learn to open their eyes under the water, further develop basic floats and glides and swim 1 metre.

Salamander Preschool 2 (3yrs - 5yrs) 
Preschoolers actively learn new swimming skills including unassisted floats and glides through games and songs.  The fun includes learning to jump into deep water.

Sunfish Preschool 3 (3yrs - 5yrs) 
Instructor and preschoolers work on stroke and skill progressions, swimmers are taught to exercise good judgment in and around water and deep water.

Crocodile Preschool 4 (3yrs - 5yrs) 
Preschoolers start independent glides and kicking in deep water.  Endurance is built through increasing distance for front and back swims.  Swimmers learn about the dolphin kick and try synchro skills in the water.

Whale Preschool 5 (3yrs - 5yrs) 
In Whale, children will learn to swim independently and participate in team games.  Preschoolers will increase their distance and improve skills in front and back swims.

Stingray Preschool 6 (3yrs - 6yrs) 
Preschoolers will continue to develop swimming skills in front crawl, back crawl and introduction to whip kick. Swimmers will also learn diving, somersaults and water safety.

School Age Swim Lessons (6yrs-13yrs)

Swim Kids 1 (6yrs - 12yrs) 
This level provides an orientation to the water and the pool area and introduces floats and glides with kicks.  Children build their endurance by improving distance.

Swim Kids 2 (6yrs - 12yrs)
 
A second orientation level which helps the child  to build skills in front and back swims.  Children are introduced to deep water activities and proper use of a PFD.

Swim  Kids 3 (6yrs - 12yrs) 
This level provides an introduction to front crawl as well the foundation for making wise choices on where and when to swim.  Diving is introduced and children will work on floats and changing direction.

Swim Kids 4 (6yrs - 12yrs) 
The front crawl, back glide and shoulder roll for back crawl are further developed.  Children work on kneeling dives, surface support and developing a greater sense of self-safety by understanding their own limits.

Swim Kids 5 (6yrs - 12yrs) 
Back crawl is introduced, along with sculling skills and whip kick on the back. Children try stride dives and receive an introduction to safe boating skills.

Swim Kids 6 (6yrs - 12yrs) 
Front and back crawl continue to be refined as the elementary backstroke is newly introduced. Children are also introduced to ice safety, rescue of others with throwing assists, treading water and the front dive.

Swim Kids 7 (6yrs - 12yrs) 
Level 7 continues to build skills and endurance for front crawl, back crawl and elementary back stroke and also introduces whip kick on the front.  Children learn about an airway and breathing obstructions, and participate in timed treading water.

Swim Kids 8 (6yrs - 12yrs) 
Level 8 provides an introduction to the breaststroke, foot first surface dives, and rescue entries.  Children learn about the dangers of open water, hypothermia, and the performance of rescue breathing on children and adults.

Swim Kids 9 (6yrs - 12yrs) 
In this level front crawl, back crawl, elementary backstroke and breaststroke continue to be refined.  Children are also encouraged to try combining different strokes and kicks for fitness.  They will practice head-first shallow dives and standing dives and learn about wise choices, peer influences, and self-rescue from the ice.

Swim Kids 10 (6yrs - 12yrs) 
This program furthers the refinement of strokes, with an introduction to butterfly and scissor kick as a warm-up/cool down stroke for fitness.  Children learn about sun safety, rescue of others from the ice and head-first and feet-first shallow dives.

Homeschool Swim Lessons (3yrs - 13yrs) 
This is Red Cross Swim Kids swim lessons for home schooled students. Students will be split up according to levels on the first day of lesson. The lesson time could be either 1:00pm or 1:45pm and each class is 45 minutes in length.

Junior Lifeguard Club (8yrs - 13yrs) 
Learn Lifesaving skills, first aid, stroke development, shadow guarding and how to run games and special events.  Intro to snorkeling, water fitness classes and speed swimming.  Fun competitions and games to play.

Adult, Teen & Advanced Lessons (13yrs)

Adult and Teen Swim Basics (13yrs ) 
A program specific for Adults and teens that can include swimming skills and water safety. Participants choose what swimming skills they would like to develop.

Adult and Teen Swim Strokes (13yrs ) 
Red Cross Swim strokes is a stroke improvement program for adults and teens. Individuals registering for this program should be able to swim a distance of 15m and be comfortable swimming on both their front and back. Swimmers set their own goals and work at their own pace.

Masters Swim Program (14yrs) 
This program is designed for people who want to improve their stroke technique and endurance. Registrant must be able to complete 4 lengths of the pool in a continuous fashion.

This is a coach led program that is designed to take you through a series of swim workouts that will help you get ready for races..

Bronze Medallion (13yrs+) 
Students learn self- rescue techniques, defense and release methods and tows and carries in preparation for challenging rescues and unconscious victims of various types, including spinal injuries and circulatory emergencies.

Bronze Cross & CPR C (13yrs+) 
Bronze Cross is designed for lifesavers who want the challenge of more advanced training including an introduction to safety supervision in aquatics facilities. Candidates develop proficiency at performing patient assessments, managing aquatic emergencies, while developing stroke endurance and fitness training skills.

Bronze Star (12yrs +)
Bronze Star is designed to deliver high-performance training for pre-teens.  Candidates learn CPR, land spinal recovery, solo & partner rescues, searches & first-aid skills. Must be 10-12 years old and able to swim 400m.

Emergency First Aid (13yrs) 
Emergency First Aid is a practical course that will give you the basic skills and knowledge needed to prevent and effectively treat life threatening emergencies. This introductory course covers breathing and cardiovascular problems as well as bleeding emergencies.

CPR C & AED (13yrs) 
CPR C Basic Rescuer is an important course for everyone in the family, teaching vital lifesaving actions for victims of all ages. This course allows you to properly recognize and respond to choking, cardiovascular, and breathing emergencies that occur with infants, children and adults.

Life Saving Instructors (LSI) (16yrs+) 
Lifesaving Instructors are trained to teach and evaluate Canadian swim patrol, Bronze Star, Lifesaving for Adults, Bronze Medallion, Bronze Cross and Distinction.

National Lifeguard Service - Pool Option (16yrs+)
The National Lifeguard award builds on the skills and knowledge of the Lifesaving Society's Bronze Medallion and Bronze Cross awards. Develop the practical skills and knowledge required to be a professional lifeguard.

Standard First Aid (13yrs) 
Standard First Aid is a comprehensive course that gives participants the ability to deliver first aid treatment in different environments. Standard first aid includes all emergency first aid course content plus victim management, hot and cold injuries, bone and joint injuries, sprains, wounds, head trauma, diabetes, burns and poisons.

Water Safety Instructor (WSI) (16yrs+) 
The water safety instructor course further develops instructional ability by focusing on how to effectively plan and teach Red Cross Swim Preschool, Swim Kids and Aqua Adults Programs.

Assistant WSI (AWSI)(16yrs+) 
Assistant Water Safety Instructor (AWSI) covers the foundation of physical and instructional skills. AWSI includes physical principles, stroke progressions, communication methods and safety supervision skills with a heavy focus on teaching principles and learning styles. Once certified candidates have two years to become a Water Safety Instructor.

WSI Recertification (16yrs) 
This course prepares candidates to instruct the Red Cross Water Safety program.  Instructors will experience, analyze and apply the Swim kids, Preschool Swim kids and Aqua Adult program curriculum.  Principles of injury prevention, inclusion, progressive learning and Red Cross fundamental principles are reinforced.

Preschool Skate Lessons (3yrs - 5yrs)

Seal 1 (3yrs - 5yrs) 
This introductory level is for 3-5 year olds who have never skated before. Children learn how to take small steps, gaining independence as they learn how to fall and stand on their own.

Penguin 2 (3yrs - 5yrs) 
In this beginner level, children work on skating the width of the rink, backwards skating and snow plow stops.

Winter Bunny 3 (3yrs - 5yrs) 
Children continue to work on stopping and gliding while also learning backwards skating and forward sculling.

Skate - PR 4/5 (Snow Leopard, Polar Bear) (3yrs - 5yrs) 
With this intermediate level, children become more proficient with forward and backwards sculling, backwards stopping and one-foot glides.

School Age Skate Lessons  (6yrs - 13yrs)

School Age 1 (6yrs - 13yrs) 
This introductory level is for children who have never skated before. Children are taught safety on the ice, balance and posture, how to fall down and get up on their own, how to skate and glide and stop.

School Age 2 (6yrs - 13yrs) 
In this beginner level, children learn two-foot gliding, forward and backwards skating and stopping are introduced to one-foot gliding and V-Pushes.

School Age 3 (6yrs - 13yrs) 
Learn backward one foot glides, turning and skating on lines and circles, and forward crossovers. This course will focus on stopping correctly and gaining strength in backwards skating and body control.

Skills include backward stroking, crossovers and formal backward outside edge(strip) and Mohawk turns.  This course will assist in developing power in skating forward and backward.

Skills include backward stroking and crossovers. Formal backward outside edge(strip) and Mohawk turns are developed along with  edge and body control.

Skating Programs

Ice Rascals (2yrs - 5yrs) 
This program is geared towards children who have never been on the ice or who are unable to stand up on the ice with skates on. CSA approved helmet and appropriate warm clothing required. Parent participation is required.
