What are biosolids?
Biosolids are the nutrient-rich organic product of wastewater treatment.  A beneficial resource, biosolids contain essential plant nutrients and organic matter.  The City of Abbotsford recycles the biosolids produced at the JAMES Treatment Plant through mine reclamation and in the production of a growing medium called Val-E-GroTM.

What are "Class A" biosolids?
“Class A” biosolids are biosolids that meet the criteria outlined under the provincial Organic Matter Recycling Regulations (OMRR).  Under OMRR, “Class A” biosolids must meet strict regulations and quality standards including numerical limits for metals in biosolids, pathogen reduction standards, and sampling and analysis protocols and frequency.  JAMES Treatment Plant biosolids are sampled and tested on a regular basis to ensure all quality criteria are met and to ensure a “Class A” rating is maintained.  Only “Class A” biosolids are used in the production of Val-E-GroTM.

Are biosolids safe to touch?
Yes.  As with handling other soil products or fertilizers, it is a good idea to wash your hands after use or use gloves.
