The McCallum Road Interchange Project was undertaken to improve safety, accommodate the higher traffic volumes of today and as predicted for the future, and provide better access to Abbotsford’s commercial centre, public institutions, key community amenities, and other local destinations.
In addition to the new bridge, the project also included improved highway deceleration and merge lanes, a new third westbound lane on Highway 1 (extending the existing three lanes at the west end of the Sumas Overhead railway bridge to 800 metres west of the new interchange), new bike lanes and sidewalks, and a new park-and-ride lot that will support carpooling and accommodate transit plans for the future.
Additional work was also carried out under this project to upgrade McCallum Road north of the new interchange from Lynn Avenue to Marshall Road, including a new median left turn lane, marked cycling lanes and watermain improvements.
Traffic began to flow across the new interchange on November 1, 2010, fifty years after the original bridge went into service. The project is expected to be fully complete by the end of October 2011. This $25 million project was cost-shared by the City of Abbotsford, Government of British Columbia and the Government of Canada.
