On December 9, 2009, the City of Abbotsford initiated a
food waste collection pilot program involving 126 homes in the City of Abbotsford. The pilot area includes all single and duplex residences identified by the food waste collection map.
The pilot was expanded to include an additional 306 homes on August 30, 2010. The expanded pilot area includes all single family and duplex residents identified by the food waste collection map. Compostable materials (food scraps and yard waste) and recycling are collected weekly. Garbage is collected every second week. Please see the following schedule for information on collection days.
In many cities similar to Abbotsford, residents, grocery stores, and other businesses have participated in food waste collection programs and are currently diverting thousands of tons of food waste per month to local composting plants. The pilot project will provide valuable information that will assist in the optimization of a City-wide program in the near future.
