Recycling, Yard Waste and Garbage Program Fees
The City of Abbotsford’s recycling, yard waste and garbage program is funded by the solid waste management utility fee identified annually on the Property Tax Notices for single-family dwellings and multi-family dwellings, Matsqui Transfer Station tipping fee allocation, extra bag sticker fee, yard waste drop off fee, and revenues from recyclable commodities.
Single-family Dwelling Fee and Extra Bag Sticker Fee
Property tax notices for single-family dwellings feature a combined garbage, yard waste and recyclables fee. The fee covers the curbside collection of a limited number of a garbage containers and an unlimited number of recycling blue bags and an unlimited number of yard waste containers and bundles. The combined fee also covers the sorting and baling of recyclables at the Abbotsford Mission Recycling Depot. The fee amounts for single-family dwellings for weekly collection, for biweekly collection, and for extra garbage bag stickers, are provided on the Finance Department's Utility User Fees webpage.
Multi-family Dwelling Fee
As multi-family units are not currently part of the City’s curbside collection system, owners must make their own arrangements for garbage, recycling and yard waste pickup. Therefore, tax notices for multi-family dwellings only include a small fee for the sorting and baling of recyclables at the Abbotsford Matsqui Recycling Depot. the Multi-family Dwelling Fee amount is provided on the Finance Deparment's Utility User Fees webpage.
Yard Waste Drop Off Fee
The yard waste drop off facility at the Abbotsford Mission Recycling Depot is partially funded by drop off fees which are specified on the Finance Departmen's Utility User Fees webpage.
Matsqui Transfer Station Tipping Fee Allocation
Metro Vancouver (formerly known as the GVRD) owns the Matsqui Transfer Station and operates it through a private contractor, Wastech Services Ltd. The tipping fees at the Matsqui Transfer Station are set by Metro Vancouver. The tipping fee is paid by the City to Metro Vancouver for all collected garbage in the curbside collection program. Of the total tipping fee amount collected by Metro Vancouver at the Matsqui Transfer Station from the curbside collection program and drop off program, $2.20 per tonne is provided to the City of Abbotsford for waste diversion programs. For 2010, an additional $1.25 per tonne is provided by Metro Vancouver to the Fraser Valley Regional District.
