Bear-Garbage Conflicts
Some areas of the City of Abbotsford, particularly in the area of Sumas Mountain, are inhabited by bears or are regularly visited by bears. One of the main attractants for bears to residential properties is garbage. In particular, April to October is bear season, however not all bears go into hibernation when there is an available food supply during winter, such as garbage. The Upper Straiton area (formerly part of Rural Area H of the FVRD) has been provided bear-resistant garbage containers to help reduce garbage from becoming a food supply for bears. All residential properties where there is the potential for bear-garbage conflicts, even those with bear-resistant garbage containers, are asked to maintain good Bear Smart practices.
