Services

The Department is responsible for the following infrastructure areas:

  • Transportation includes roads, traffic signals, sidewalks, street lights. Traffic safety and efficient goods movement are the top priorities.
  • Transit includes the partnership with Mission Abbotsford Transit Committee and with BC Transit to provide service through a contractor. Expansion of service to the Airport, more frequent university service, and increases in ridership are priorities. Eastern and western transit exchanges under development by Engineering staff.
  • Regional Water Supply department operates the regional water supply system for Abbotsford and Mission. Long term planning for supply and water quality are priorities.
  • Water Distribution includes Abbotsford reservoirs, distribution piping, valves, and hydrants. Provision of adequate pressures, conservation, maintenance of water quality and fire flows are priorities.
  • JAMES Treatment Plant operates the JAMES Treatment plant for Abbotsford and Mission. Protection of the environment through advanced secondary treatment and source control is the top priority.
  • Wastewater Conveyance is responsible for wastewater lift stations and conveyance piping. Cleaning and blockage removal to prevent overflows and reduction of system infiltration and inflow are the top priorities.
  • Fleet includes Police cars, fire trucks, Airport equipment, and the general City fleet. Life cycle cost reductions through planned strategic purchasing and reduced environmental impacts are the top priorities.
  • Surveying, Mapping & GIS is responsible for surveying, Geographic Information System (GIS) data, maps, AutoCAD designs, and orthophotos. Provision of accurate data and maps to the public, consultants, and staff is the top priority.
  • Dyking, Drainage & Irrigation is responsible for dyking, drainage, irrigation on Matsqui and Sumas Prairies and drainage throughout the rest of the City. Priorities are flood protection and irrigation assistance to the farming community using environmentally sustainable methods.
  • Sanitation includes waste collection, recycling promotion and collection, greenwaste site, and recycling depot partnership with Community Services. Promotion and delivery of environmentally sustainable waste practices based on the 3R’s of reduce, reuse and recycle is the top priority.
  • Soil Removal includes City gravel pits, private pits and quarries, soil deposit sites. Regulation of private pits, quarries, and soil deposit sites to ensure minimal affect on the environment and public is the top priority.
  • Buildings include City buildings including City Hall, Works Yard, Libraries, and Recreation facilities. Priorities are cost and energy efficiencies.
