Maclure Road Water Main Upgrade

Water Transmission Main Installation on Maclure Road

The City of Abbotsford is planning major expansions to its water and sanitary networks. The networks are constantly monitored and modeled to ensure service delivery to a growing population.  One of the recommendations for system improvement is to twin the transmission main on Maclure Road between Gladwin Road and the Maclure Reservoir.

Sandpiper Contracting LLP has been awarded the contract for the installation of this water transmission main. The main scope of work for this contract includes installation of 2725 m of 1200 mm diameter welded steel transmission main, including valves, tie ins and associated appurtenances on Maclure Road (see layout plan).

Traffic Management Plan

The 1200mm diameter watermain will be installed on the southern carriage way of Maclure Road.  To ensure traffic and public safety it has been decided to completely close both east bound lanes of Maclure Road to traffic during construction.

The contract specifies that no more than one of the sections of the Maclure Road will be closed at any given time. In order to comply with this requirement, the contractor has scheduled construction work along Maclure Road, involving a complete east bound road closure, within following approximate time frames:

Section 1 – Old Yale Road to Clearbrook Road, October 5, 2009 to October 30, 2009 (Detour Plan 1)
Section 2 – Clearbrook Road to Trethewey Street, November 2, 2009 to Nov 20, 2009 (Detour Plan 2)
Section 3 – Trethewey Street to Gladwin Road, November 23, 2009 to December 11, 2009 (Detour Plan 3)

For the watermain crossing of Maclure Road, construction will be staged and traffic will be routed so that both east and west bound traffic will be accommodated.

A minimum of one lane of north/south traffic will be maintained at all intersections of Maclure Road.  Traffic control persons will be positioned during work hours to direct/control traffic.  Traffic diversion routes have been identified in association with City traffic staff.  Detour signs will be installed.

Discovery Trail

Discovery Trail will remain open during construction on Maclure Road, however during days when construction work will be crossing the walkway connecting two ends of trail across Maclure Road, users will be asked to take detour and exercise caution. Traffic control persons will be deputed to direct trail users around construction work. Signs will also be posted in each direction on Discovery Trail advising of construction.
