Personal Preparedness

72 hours-is your family prepared?
During an emergency, you and your family could be on your own for an extended period of time. Emergency services may not be readily available, as increasing demands are placed on responders.

It may take emergency workers some time to get to you as they help those in most critical need. By taking a few simple steps today, we can all become better prepared if disaster strikes.

Most disasters are beyond our control. However, with a little planning and preparation, there are ways to minimize the impacts to your family and community.

Here are the three steps:
  • Know the risks Knowing the hazards and risks specific to your community can help you better prepare.
  • Make a plan Every household needs an emergency plan. Family members need to know what to do if disaster strikes. We should all practice what to do in different emergency situations.
  • Prepare a kit During an emergency some basic supplies are critical. There may be no power or running water so we should all be prepared to be self-sufficient for at least 72 hours.
