Abbotsford Social Development Advisory Committee (ASDAC)

ASDAC was created in 2006 through an extensive consultation with community and social agencies within Abbotsford and the region. The creation of ASDAC was a key recommendation of the Abbotsford Cares report, a comprehensive review of plans, documents, reports and research findings related to social issues in Abbotsford.

ASDAC provides advice to Council on social issues, and helps guide the City’s social planning function. The committee helps to build Abbotsford’s legacy as a community that cares about all community members, including its most vulnerable and marginalized citizens.

The Committee is comprised of 21 voting members chaired by Ron Van Wyk, Mennonite Central Committee BC and vice-chaired by Andrea Senft, School District No. 34 (Abbotsford). ASDAC membership includes representatives from the following:

A. Community-wide Organizations:

  • United Way of the Fraser Valley
  • The Salvation Army
  • Mennonite Central Committee BC
  • Abbotsford Community Services
  • Abbotsford Chamber of Commerce
  • Abbotsford Community Foundation
  • School District No. 34 (Abbotsford)
  • University of the Fraser Valley

B. City Council - 2 Councillors

C. Public Agencies:

  • Ministry of Children and Family Development
  • Ministry of Social Development
  • BC Housing
  • Fraser Health Authority

ASDAC also includes representatives from each of the following:
 
D. “At large” Citizen Representatives:

  • Three positions for citizens selected “at large” to represent the overall community interest and to provide balance in the Committee.

E. Priority Specific Representatives:

  • Youth
  • Seniors
  • Children and family
  • People with disabilities
  • Diversity and immigration
  • Wellness and health
  • Public safety and justice
  • Affordable housing

F. City Staff

  • ASDAC is supported by staff from Community Planning and includes representatives from the Abbotsford Police Department and Parks, Recreation & Culture.

There are several working groups that work on priority projects and initiatives identified by ASDAC.
