The City of Abbotsford is enriched by the diversity of its community members and takes pride in having an inclusive and accessible community. Abbotsford is currently facing a range of issues related to accessibility, due in part to increased sensitivity and awareness, and changing demographics.
The Social Planning Department in collaboration with the Abbotsford Social Development Advisory Committee have been working to address a variety of issues related to accessibility and inclusion in Abbotsford.
Priorities:
- To continue to support the 10 by 10 Challenge at the City of Abbotsford and community-wide to increase employment for people with disabilities.
- To support Parks, Recreation & Culture towards increasing programs and activities for Abbotsford children with disabilities.
- To support initiatives to increase Employer ‘disability confidence’, including at the City of Abbotsford.
- To follow up on recommendations from the transportation infrastructure accessibility audit.
Current Initiatives:
- Out and About Initiative: to improving the accessibility of the pedestrian routes in Abbotsford.
- I Can Play 2 Initiative: to develop recreation programming that provide barrier free opportunities for children with disabilities.
- Work Works and 10 by 10 Challenge: to increase employment opportunities for people with disabilities.
- Abbotsford Seniors Transportation Initiative: to promote volunteerism and cultivate strategies that facilitate easier and more reliable transportation for seniors.
